Sgairneach Mhor is one of a group of 4 Munros that lie to the west of the Pass of Drumochter. The Munro is well seen from the A9 near the Drumochter Pass Summit where its NE Corrie (Coire Creagach) is a fantastic sight. To the west a ridge runs to a low col before connecting with adjoining Munro Beinn Udlamain. A ridge running east connects to neighbouring Corbett The Sow of Athol, which is well worth a visit.
From the summit there are fantastic views across the Drumochter Pass to the Eastern Drumochter Hills. Trumping that however is the superb views to the west to the Ben Alder group of Munros and Loch Ericht.
Sgairneach Mhor can be combined with the 3 nearby Munros which are all connected by ridge systems to make a long but rewarding day on the hills.
The most common route of ascent is walking in through Coire Dhomhain and taking to the col between Sgairneach and neighbouring Munro Beinn Udlamain
